Screen shot 2010-01-01 at 3.24.51 PMChronicles of EMS is a reality web series that travels the world exploring EMS systems, how they operate and the personalities behind them. From San Francisco to the UK every system has it’s unique differences that can offer other providers a different perspective and educate viewers on ideas and concepts that work. Through realtime communication and social media, the sharing of best practices bring paramedics and EMT’s together in a community built around the web series engaging them in dialogue, raising awareness and showcasing the real side of the EMS Industry.

Chronicles of EMS was developed by Director/ Producer/ Paramedic Thaddeus Setla NREMT-P. and Chris Montera EMT-P.  It was conceived as a chance to share the knowledge of how all EMS Systems operate and entertain the viewers. During a podcast on EMS Garage with Paramedic Justin Schorr from the San Francisco Fire Department and Mark Glencorse, a Paramedic from the UK, our paths crossed through social media allowing us a way of sharing their story and expanding it to other parts of the world.

Tips to Use Social Media for Product Purchasing

I saw some great products at the EMS Expo 2009 exhibit hall in Atlanta last week. If you saw something you liked, use these social media Tips to learn more about the company and their products.

1. E-mail the vendor and ask for hyperlink(s) to customer print, audio, and video testimonials about the products that are not on the vendor’s Web site.

2. Search social media sites for comments about the vendor and their products. Start with search.twitter.com. Set-up an RSS of the Twitter search in your RSS reader.

3. Set-up a daily Google Alert e-mail for the product to find posts about the vendor and product.

4. Search the more than six billion YouTube videos for videos showing the product in use at actual incidents or during training scenarios.

5. Ask the nearly 20,000+ members of EMSConnect.com, JEMSConnect.com, or EMSUnited.com members for their opinions and experiences by starting a discussion.

Finally, browse the archives of MedicCast and EMS Garage podcasts. These shows review and discuss products for EMS professionals. If the product you are interested in has not been reviewed or discussed, contact the show hosts – Jamie Davis and Chris Montera – and ask them to check out the product.

Which products and services caught your eye? How are using social media to learn more about those products?

Any provider who has done compressions on a cardiac arrest patient for an extended period of time knows how grueling it can be. Jamie Davis, the Podmedic looks at the new battery operated LUCAS 2 from Physio-Control and asks can this little machine save a paramedic’s back?  Watch the video and decide for yourself!

At EMS Expo, we had the opportunity to interview one of the engineers from Physio-Control who devises the tests that simulate real EMS field punishment. EMTs and paramedics can be a bit hard on their equipment and you need to have a rugged cardiac monitor to stand up to weather, falls, and other abuses in the field.  Check out the video.
